Ayesha is a student at the University of Toronto and works as an advocate for mental health. She is a peer and wellness counselor, advocating and supporting sufferers of mental illness. She is entering into mental health law.

She provides resources through the peer wellness program and supports people receiving the care they need.

Sharma discusses her role as a family therapist and group home counselor. She shares what she’s been through to help others learn what to do or how to respond.

She is now writing to provide others with self help and now writing fictional stories of characters with mental illnesses. She created a mental illness in “Dream Mire,” in her attempt to humanize mental illness. The character’s struggles and stress are humanizing and symbolic of others facing mental illness in our world.

Suzette, my dearest sister comes on our show to share her story of struggling with and supporting her son, my nephew, with anxiety, depression and drug addiction. Her story is extremely powerful and her emotions are true and genuine.

Drug addiction often stems from self medicating when suffering from depression, anxiety or other ailments. Her story is real, the struggle long and difficult, but not impossible. I’m a witness to the hard work, long nights and endless tears on this journey.

Season 1 - Episode 10a - Nilza Elita - Author - 11/01/18

Author Nilza Elita supports advocacy of mental health and raising awareness. She wrote about a character that suffers from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, in an effort to help normalize the two illnesses. Her book is also released this week. Go find her on Instagram and check out her book, “Dare to Imagine.”

She researched about both mental illnesses prior to and during her writing. She wanted the characteristics of her characters to be real.

Robbie shares his experience and thought on humanizing mental illness. He shares his story and experience speaking on the issue of mental illness to help humanize it world-wide. He himself was near taking his own life and after the news of his friends taking their lives, he devoted his cause to help raise awareness and to end the discrimination mental illness sufferers face.

Julia Blake Author discusses her book and the bullying she endured as a child. Her character suffers horrendous bullying from all sides and nobody comes to her aid. Bullying in our nation’s schools has been a world-wide epidemic and this book helps open eyes to those that bully, being a cause for dialogue and lessons in school.

Julia herself came through this to become a strong author and her only message is to support others to seek help, talk to someone and for the bullies to stop maltreatment of others.

Author Paul McGregor discusses the issue of suicide as it pertains to his coping with the loss of his father to suicide, in an effort to raise awareness. We open-dialogue about the needs in the world in the face of suicidal statistics, making a difference and reducing the stigma and labels.

Ask twice is a campaign, led by others, but joined by Paul McGregor. The idea is to ask twice about how someone is doing, especially if they appear to be suicidal. Most often than not, the second attempt will divulge the true feelings of someone near taking their life. This is a world-wide movement. The statistics of men that lose their lives to suicide is currently:

The annual age-adjusted suicide rate is 13.42 per 100,000individuals.

  • Men die by suicide 3.53x more often than women.

  • On average, there are 123 suicides per day.

  • White males accounted for 7 of 10 suicides in 2016.

  • Firearms account for 51% of all suicides in 2016.

  • The rate of suicide is highest in middle age — white men in particular.
