Alice Pirola discusses the experience of abuse during her childhood and how her life was thrown for a loop for making what she thought was the right decision. The outcome of all of this would lead to a Borderline Personality Disorder. She suffers anxiety, depression, OCD and PTSD as well and has not only become an advocate for mental illness, she's a speaker for NAMI. She's also publishing a book this year, "Searching For Grey," which can be used by clinician's, family members of sufferers of mental illness.
She is a speaker during her NAMI meetings and also participates on the website "The Mighty," which is a website forum for the advocacy of mental health sufferers.

Season 1 - Episode 19 - Florencia shares her story of bipolar disorder, advocacy and her book Mulatto Daughter in America
Story of the struggles of one young girl, growing up abused in America, later to be diagnosed with Bipolar disorder. She discusses her advocacy for others, as well as her brother who took his life. Listen in and comment on iTunes.
She has been a victim of abuse, discrimination and also faced with abuse from a previous tenant where she lived.
Despite these limitations and constant attacks, she rises above, records videos and writes her stories.

She is now writing to provide others with self help and now writing fictional stories of characters with mental illnesses. She created a mental illness in “Dream Mire,” in her attempt to humanize mental illness. The character’s struggles and stress are humanizing and symbolic of others facing mental illness in our world.

Her experiences have afforded her the desire to write about others that suffer and support our work to raise awareness in an attempt to normalize mental illness. She first learned of it during a postpartum experience with depression.
Season 1 - Episode 10a - Nilza Elita - Author - 11/01/18
Author Nilza Elita supports advocacy of mental health and raising awareness. She wrote about a character that suffers from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, in an effort to help normalize the two illnesses. Her book is also released this week. She researched about both mental illnesses prior to and during her writing. She wanted the characteristics of her characters to be real.

Julia Blake Author discusses her book and the bullying she endured as a child. Her character suffers horrendous bullying from all sides and nobody comes to her aid. Bullying in our nation’s schools has been a world-wide epidemic and this book helps open eyes to those that bully, being a cause for dialogue and lessons in school.
Julia herself came through this to become a strong author and her only message is to support others to seek help, talk to someone and for the bullies to stop maltreatment of others.

Author Paul McGregor discusses the issue of suicide as it pertains to his coping with the loss of his father to suicide, in an effort to raise awareness. We open-dialogue about the needs in the world in the face of suicidal statistics, making a difference and reducing the stigma and labels.
Ask twice is a campaign, led by others, but joined by Paul McGregor. The idea is to ask twice about how someone is doing, especially if they appear to be suicidal. Most often than not, the second attempt will divulge the true feelings of someone near taking their life. This is a world-wide movement. The statistics of men that lose their lives to suicide is currently:
The annual age-adjusted suicide rate is 13.42 per 100,000individuals.
Men die by suicide 3.53x more often than women.
On average, there are 123 suicides per day.
White males accounted for 7 of 10 suicides in 2016.
Firearms account for 51% of all suicides in 2016.
The rate of suicide is highest in middle age — white men in particular.

Sarah shares her experience with learning that her childhood friends suffered from Schizophrenia post horrific crime. She shared the pain and confusion she suffered of not really knowing he had this illness until he murdered someone. She couldn’t figure out why she didn’t know and why he never spoke of it with her.
You’ll learn that through the podcast, it’s possible that she was the only voice not labeling him with his disease. She treated him as a friend and didn’t judge him.
